Dr. Andrew Alegría is an accomplished musician, choral director, soloist, and teacher.  His music development began early, taking piano lessons from his father.  In 1998, he was accepted to Baylor University, where he furthered his music education.  Dr. Alegría graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Music in Church Music.  After graduation, he moved to Houston, Texas, where he taught private voice and piano lessons within the Fort Bend and Houston Independent School Districts.

    He became head of the Music Ministry at Westminster United Methodist Church in 2004, where he conducted many grand works.  While living in Houston, Texas, he sang with the Houston Grand Opera Chorus.  Dr. Alegría moved to South Carolina in 2009.  He was employed as a vocalist for Christ Church Episcopal Church.  After some time, Dr. Alegría began stepping in for the music minister in choral rehearsals and Sunday morning services.   In the summer of 2010, he became the chorus master for the Greenville Opera, conducting Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and the opening 2010 Gala.

    His passion for music brought him to New Mexico, where he studied under Professor Bradley Ellingboe at the University of New Mexico.  His education at the University of New Mexico has given him the privilege of conducting and studying such grand works as Cherubini's Requiem Mass in C minor, Clausen's Requiem, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Orff's Carmina Burana, and Puccini's Messa di Gloria.  In 2011, he became the chorus master for the University of New Mexico Opera Department, conducting Leoncavallo's Pagliacci.  Dr. Alegría continued to be the chorus master for Puccini's Suor Angelica and Le Villi in the 2013 opera season.  Dr. Alegría also had the pleasure of conducting the Prague Orchestra and University of New Mexico Chorus at Dvořák Hall in Prague, Czech Republic, where he conducted Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass: Kyrie.  In 2012, he graduated with a Master of Music and was honored to receive distinction.  

    While in New Mexico, he stepped in during Professor Ellingboe's 2013 sabbatical as a Lecture of Music, where he conducted the University Chorus in Vivaldi's Gloria and Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs.   While teaching at the university, he conducted a professional choral ensemble, Coro de Cámara, in Santa Fe, New Mexico,  a children’s chorus through the New Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra, and several musical theater companies.  His musical theatre repertoire consists of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Shrek the Musical, Fiddler on the Roof, and Tarzan the Musical.

    Dr. Alegría completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts at Louisiana State University under Dr. John Dickson.  His monograph is on Ariel Ramírez’s Misa Por La Paz y La Justicia.  While in Louisiana, he was the Director of Music Ministry at First United Methodist Church in Gonzales, LA.  Dr. Alegría was also involved with several musical theatre companies in Southern Louisiana.  His musical theatre repertoire includes Jekyll and Hyde, The Addams Family, Cinderella, Rock of Ages, and The Little Mermaid at Ascension Community Theatre and Hairspray at St John Theatre.  

    In 2017, Dr. Alegría moved to Dubuque, IA, as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Clarke University. During this time, he conducted the Collegiate Singers, Cantabile, Melos, and Clarke Chamber Orchestra.  He also taught voice lessons and lectured on American Music History.

     Currently, Dr. Alegría is the Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Studies at Sul Ross State University.  At SRSU he conducts the Concert Choir and Musical Theatre Ensemble, teaches private voice, and lectures on vocal technique.
